Google Merchant Center and Meta Product Feeds: What They Are and How They Help You Sell

A modern online store is not just a website with products, a shopping cart, and order checkout. To attract customers and increase sales, it's important to present your products where potential customers are looking for them: on Google, Facebook, and Instagram.

This is exactly why Google Merchant Center and Meta product feeds are used. They allow you to transmit information about products from your online store to advertising platforms, keep your catalog up-to-date, and use products in advertising campaigns.

Thanks to product feeds, customers can see product photos, prices, names, and other important information before visiting your website.

Let's explore what a product feed is, how it works, how Google and Meta feeds differ, and why they've become an essential e-commerce tool.

What is a Product Feed?

A Product Feed is a structured file that contains information about an online store's products in a format understood by advertising and trading platforms.

Simply put, a product feed is an electronic catalog of your store, prepared for automatic data exchange with other services.

Each product in the feed has a specific set of characteristics:

  • a unique product identifier;
  • name and description;
  • price and currency;
  • link to the product page;
  • link to the image;
  • availability information;
  • manufacturer or brand;
  • Category and additional characteristics.

For example, if your store sells a smartphone, the feed may contain its model, brand, price, photo, stock availability, and a link to the purchase page.

After uploading such a file, the advertising platform processes the information and uses it to create a product catalog.

Why Does an Online Store Need a Product Feed?

Imagine an online store with 5,000 products. Each one has its own name, description, price, photos, and characteristics.

Adding all products manually to Google or Facebook is a long and inconvenient process. And what if prices change daily?

A product feed solves this problem.

With feeds, an online store can transmit a large product assortment to advertising platforms without manually creating each product listing.

Main advantages of using product feeds:

  • Automation. Product information is transmitted in a structured format.
  • Time savings. You don't need to manually add each item to the advertising catalog.
  • Information relevance. Regular feed updates help maintain correct prices and product availability.
  • Advertising scalability. You can work with hundreds or thousands of products.
  • More advertising opportunities. Products can be used in Google Shopping and Meta catalog ads.

In fact, a product feed creates an information bridge between an online store and advertising systems.

What is Google Merchant Center Feed?

Google Merchant Center is a Google service that allows sellers to submit product information for use in Google's shopping features.

A Google Merchant Center product feed contains structured data based on which Google determines what products are available in the store, how much they cost, and which pages to direct potential buyers to.

Where Do Products from Google Merchant Center Appear?

Depending on your account settings, sales country, compliance with requirements, and advertising campaigns, information from Merchant Center can be used in various Google features.

Among them:

  • Google Shopping product ads;
  • the "Shopping" tab on Google;
  • product blocks in search results;
  • free product listings;
  • Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads.

For example, a user enters "buy wireless headphones" in Google. Among the results, they may see product offerings with photos, store names, and prices.

Such ads allow the buyer to evaluate the offer before visiting the website.

At the same time, having a product in the feed does not guarantee display: Google verifies the data, compliance with rules, and determines placement opportunities.

What Data Does a Google Merchant Center Feed Contain?

Google uses standardized product attributes. Some of them are mandatory, others are needed only under certain conditions, or help improve information quality.

For example, the price can be transmitted in the format 1299.00 UAH, and the availability status — in_stock.

It is important that the price, condition, and availability in the feed correspond to the information on the product page. Discrepancies can cause warnings or rejection of offers.

A complete list of attributes and rules for their use are provided in the Google Merchant Center Product Data Specification.

What is a Meta product feed for Facebook and Instagram?

Meta Product Feed is a structured file with product data that is used to create and update a product catalog in Meta Commerce Manager.

This catalog can serve as a source of information for product advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

Unlike traditional ads, where an advertiser manually selects a specific product, Meta catalog ads allow the system to select products from the catalog according to campaign settings and available audience signals.

How does the Facebook and Instagram product catalog work?

The operation of Meta's product catalog consists of several stages.

First, an online store transmits information about products through the feed. Next, Meta processes the file and creates or updates products in the catalog.

After that, the catalog can be used in available ad formats and other trading features of the platform.

For example, a clothing store can transmit to Meta:

  • T-shirts;
  • Jeans;
  • Jackets;
  • Footwear;
  • Accessories.

Each product listing will contain a photo, name, price, link, and other characteristics.

If the store updates the feed and Meta successfully processes the new data, the corresponding changes are reflected in the catalog.

Dynamic product advertising in Meta

One of the most important advantages of Meta's product feed is the ability to use dynamic product advertising.

Imagine a situation: a visitor browsed several sneaker models in your online store but did not place an order.

If Meta Pixel or Conversions API is configured on the site, events transmit the required product identifiers, and the advertising campaign has the appropriate settings, Meta can use these signals to show relevant products.

Product advertising can be applied for:

  • Re-engaging store visitors;
  • Advertising viewed products;
  • Working with an audience that has added products to the cart;
  • Finding potential customers;
  • Promoting a wide range of products.

Thus, the product catalog becomes the foundation for personalized advertising without the need to create separate ads for each product.

Key differences between Google Merchant Center and Meta

Although both platforms use product feeds, their advertising capabilities differ.

The main difference lies in the method of attracting potential buyers.

Google often helps find a user who is already searching for a specific product.

Meta allows you to display products to a potentially interested audience, including people who have previously interacted with the store.

That's why for many online stores, using both platforms can be more effective than working with just one advertising channel.

Product feed formats: XML and CSV

Different data formats are used to transmit products to advertising platforms.

Among the most common are XML and CSV.

Both formats can contain the same basic product characteristics, but have different structures.

Features of a product XML feed

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a format of structured data in which information is transmitted using special tags.

XML is widely used for integrating online stores with trading and advertising platforms.

An example of an XML feed fragment from Google Merchant Center:

<item>
  <g:id>1001</g:id>
  <g:title>Wireless headphones</g:title>
  <g:description>Bluetooth headphones</g:description>
  <g:link>https://example.com/product-1001</g:link>
  <g:image_link>https://example.com/image.jpg</g:image_link>
  <g:price>1299.00 UAH</g:price>
  <g:availability>in_stock</g:availability>
  <g:condition>new</g:condition>
  <g:brand>Example</g:brand>
</item>

An example of a single product element within an XML feed RSS with Google namespace.

Key advantages of XML:

  • clear data structure;
  • support for a large number of attributes;
  • ability to transmit complex product characteristics;
  • convenience of automated information exchange;
  • Compatibility with relevant Google and Meta data sources.

XML is especially convenient for stores with a large assortment and regular changes to product information.

Advantages of a product CSV feed

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a text format in which product information is presented as a table.

Each row corresponds to a separate product, and the columns contain its characteristics.

An example of a CSV feed for Meta:

id,title,price,availability,condition
1001,"Wireless headphones","1299.00 UAH","in stock","new"
1002,"Bluetooth speaker","1899.00 UAH","in stock","new"

A shortened example of CSV. A complete feed for Meta should also contain other required fields, including description, links, images, and brand identifiers.

CSV has several advantages:

  • simple table format;
  • small file size;
  • convenience of viewing and editing;
  • ability to import to Excel or Google Sheets;
  • support by Meta product catalogs.

What to choose: XML or CSV?

The choice depends on the advertising platform and the method of data preparation.

For Google Merchant Center, XML is one of the standard options for transmitting product information.

For Meta, you can use both XML and CSV, if the file meets catalog requirements.

It is important to understand that the quality of a product feed is determined not by the file extension, but by the correctness of its structure and the relevance of the data.

What should a quality product feed look like?

Even a technically correct file does not always ensure good results.

For a product feed to be beneficial, attention must be paid to the completeness, accuracy, and quality of information.

Correct product names and descriptions

The name should clearly describe the product.

For example, instead of a general formulation "Black headphones," it is better to use a more informative option: "Wireless Bluetooth headphones XYZ, black."

The name can include the brand, model, product type, and key features.

The description should also be useful to the buyer, without unnecessary repetition of keywords and advertising exaggerations.

Quality images

Photography is one of the first elements a buyer pays attention to.

It is advisable to use clear, high-resolution photos that properly showcase the product.

For Google Merchant Center, starting January 31, 2027, an updated minimum requirement for product image size will take effect — 500 × 500 pixels. Google is already warning about images that do not meet future requirements.

Current prices and inventory

Suppose that on the website the product costs 1,500 UAH, but the product feed shows 1,200 UAH.

Such discrepancies can create a negative experience for the buyer and cause problems with product moderation.

Therefore, the information in the feed should correspond to the actual data of the store.

Why is regular feed updates important?

Prices, promotions, and inventory levels can change multiple times throughout the day.

Without regular updates, the advertising platform will continue to use outdated data until the next successful import or other information update.

Automated updates help reduce the number of such discrepancies, especially for stores with a large assortment.

Typical errors in Google and Meta product feeds

When working with product feeds, online store owners may encounter import issues and rejection of individual products.

The most common errors:

  1. Missing required attributes. The file lacks price, name, image, or other necessary field.
  2. Incorrect price format. Currency is not specified or an incorrect value is used.
  3. Unavailable images. The link points to a deleted file or a resource with restricted access.
  4. Outdated availability. The feed shows a product for sale even though it is no longer in stock.
  5. Duplicate identifiers. Different products have the same id.
  6. Incorrect encoding. Due to encoding errors, names and descriptions are displayed incorrectly.
  7. Mismatch between website and feed data. Prices, characteristics, or product status differ.
  8. Incorrect XML or CSV structure. The platform cannot process the file correctly.

For Google, you need to check product diagnostics in Merchant Center, and for Meta — import issues and product statuses in Commerce Manager.

Timely error correction helps increase the number of products available for advertising.

How to prepare an online store for using product feeds?

Before connecting Google Merchant Center or Meta, it is worth checking whether the product catalog of your store is filled out correctly.

Special attention should be paid to names, descriptions, prices, photos, brands, and availability statuses.

You also need to ensure that product pages are accessible to visitors and that links to images work without authorization.

The next step is to create a product data source in the required format.

In Google Merchant Center, you can configure an appropriate data source, and in Meta Commerce Manager — add a feed to the product catalog. If the selected connection method supports file retrieval via URL, the platform can regularly download it from the specified link.

After the first import, it is important to check whether all required products were processed successfully, whether there are no rejected items, and whether their characteristics are displayed correctly.

Separately, you should set up regular data updates so that advertising systems receive current information about the assortment.
